Regular supervision and effective management help staff work safely, develop in their roles and maintain high standards of care. Explore practical guidance to strengthen supervision, identify concerns early and create a culture of openness and accountability.

Keep safeguarding “live” through regular supervision, feedback and support. Encourage staff to reflect on their practice, raise concerns and improve. A strong, open culture makes it easier to recognise and address risky behaviour at an early stage.

What you need to do

  • Hold regular, structured supervision meetings

  • Monitor behaviour, performance, and wellbeing

  • Provide clear feedback and support development

  • Record discussions, actions, and any concerns

  • Take action where performance or conduct falls below expectations

Key things to get right

  • Create a culture of openness
Staff should feel confident raising concerns and discussing challenges.

  • Act early on concerns
Address issues promptly before they escalate into greater risks.

  • Keep clear records
Accurate documentation supports decision-making and accountability.

Common risks to avoid

  • Irregular or inconsistent supervision

  • Focusing only on performance, not behaviour and values

  • Ignoring low-level concerns or early warning signs

  • Poor record-keeping of discussions and actions
